Add a product with sizes and colors
Create one style with a full size run and colorways, each with its own SKU, barcode, price, stock and photo.

How do sizes and colors work in BoutiquePOS?
You create one product for the style, then add variations for each size and color. Each variation (for example “Linen shirt, Navy, M”) gets its own SKU, barcode, price, stock count and photo. At the register, scanning the tag picks the exact variation, so your size run stays accurate.
Before you start
- Your location is set up and your tax rate exists (see the guide to creating your account).
- The style name, brand and category.
- The size run you stock and the colors this style comes in.
- Cost price and selling price, plus any sizes priced differently.
- Opening stock per size and color, if you are counting existing stock.
- Photos: one main image for the style and, ideally, one per color.
Step by step: create variation templates
Do this once and reuse it on every style.
- Go to Products → Variations.
- Choose Add and name the template, for example “Size”.
- Enter the values in the order customers expect: XS, S, M, L, XL. Order matters, because reports and the store follow it.
- Save, then add a second template called “Color” with your common colors.
Useful templates for boutiques:
- Letter sizes: XS, S, M, L, XL, XXL.
- Numeric sizes: 0, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14.
- Abaya lengths: 52, 54, 56, 58, 60.
- Kids: 2-3Y, 4-5Y, 6-7Y.
- Eastern wear: Stitched S, M, L and Unstitched.
Step by step: add the product
- Go to Products → Add product.
- Enter the product name, brand, category and unit (usually “Piece”).
- Leave SKU blank to auto-generate, or enter your own style code.
- Choose the barcode type. C128 suits most label printers; use EAN-13 or UPC-A if your supplier’s tags already carry those codes.
- Tick manage stock so counts are tracked.
- Set the alert quantity, for example 2, so low sizes show on the dashboard.
- Set product type to Variable.
- Pick the “Size” template and select the sizes this style comes in.
- Each size becomes a row. Fill in cost price, margin and selling price. Enter the price once and copy it down, then adjust any size that differs.
- Upload the main product image. Add per-variation images where colors differ.
- Choose the applicable tax and whether the price is inclusive or exclusive.
- Save. If you have opening stock, choose Save and add opening stock and enter quantities per variation for each location.
What about size and color together?
If your setup offers two-level variations, choose Size then Color and every combination is generated. If it lists one level only, use a combined template such as “Navy / S”, “Navy / M”, or create one product per colorway with the size run inside it. Many boutiques prefer one product per colorway because each color then has its own photo and page in the online store. More on choosing an approach is on the size and color variants page.
How do I check it worked?
- Open the product and confirm each variation shows a SKU and stock figure.
- Go to the register, search the style name and check that every size appears.
- Print barcode labels for one size and scan it at the register. The correct size and price should land in the cart.
Common problems
A size is missing from the product
You did not tick it when picking from the template. Edit the product, add the missing value to the variation list and save. Existing stock on other sizes is not affected.
All sizes show the same SKU
You entered a SKU on the parent and the variations copied it. Leave variation SKUs blank to auto-generate, or give each one a unique suffix such as -XS, -S, -M.
Stock shows zero after saving
You saved without adding opening stock. Use Add opening stock on the product, or receive the goods through a purchase so the cost is recorded properly.
The product does not show at the register
Check that it is assigned to the location you are selling from and that it is not marked “not for selling”.
