How do I ring up a sale?
Open your register, scan or search for each item, pick or add the customer, choose Pay and record how they paid. The receipt prints and stock drops at that location. Your first sale takes a few minutes; after that it is seconds.
Do a test sale before you open the doors so the receipt, tax and printer are confirmed.
Before you start
- At least one product with stock at your location (see the guide to adding a product with sizes and colors).
- A register set up for your location (see the guide to adding locations and registers).
- Payment methods turned on for the location: cash, card and any custom methods.
- A receipt printer connected to the device, or a plan to email receipts.
- A barcode scanner, or tags you can search by name or SKU.
Step by step: your first sale
- Choose POS from the menu (or the register icon at the top).
- If prompted, open the register: choose the register and enter the cash in the drawer. See open and close the register.
- Check the location at the top of the screen is the shop you are standing in.
- Scan the tag, or type part of the name or SKU in the product search and pick the exact size and color.
- Repeat for each item. To sell two of the same, scan twice or change the quantity on the line.
- Pick the customer. Search by name or phone, or add a new one with +. Leave it as walk-in customer if they prefer not to share details.
- If a discount applies, click the line to set an item discount, or use Discount for the whole sale. Your role must allow it.
- Choose a payment button:
- Cash: enter the amount handed over. The change due is shown.
- Card: run the card on your processor’s terminal first. When it is approved, record it as Card.
- Multiple pay: split across cash, card, store credit or a custom method.
- Choose Finalize. The receipt opens for printing.
- Hand over the receipt and the goods.
Taking card payments
BoutiquePOS records payments; it does not move money. Your card processor’s terminal charges the card. Always wait for the terminal’s approval before finalizing, so a declined card never shows as paid.
Should I always add the customer?
For a boutique, it is worth it. With a customer on each sale you get:
- Purchase history for “what size did I buy last time?” questions.
- Easier returns and exchanges, because the original sale is easy to find.
- Loyalty points, if you use them.
- A list you can use for new-arrival messages, with their permission.
What other options are on the register screen?
- Draft: park a sale while the customer tries something else on, then recall it.
- Quotation: save a quote for a bridal or bulk order without taking stock.
- Suspend: hold a sale and serve the next person in line.
- Recent transactions: reprint or look up today’s receipts.
- Selling price group: switch to wholesale or staff pricing, if you have set those up.
Common problems
“Out of stock” when the item is on the rack
The stock was never recorded at this location, or the item was received at a different location. Check stock under the product, then receive it here or transfer it in. Until then a manager can record a stock adjustment.
Scanning does nothing
Click into the product search box first. If it still fails, test the scanner in a text editor; it should type the code and press Enter.
The receipt does not print
Check the printer is the default in the browser’s print window, the paper is loaded, and the receipt layout’s paper size matches the printer (80 mm for most thermal printers).
The total is different from the price tag
Tax is being added on top of tax-inclusive prices, or the other way round. Check the tax setting on the product. In the UAE most tags include VAT; in the US tax is usually added at the till. Your hardware page lists printers and scanners that are known to work.
