Open and close the register
Start each shift with a counted float, close it with a cash count, and read the register report so the drawer always balances.

How does the register work each day?
At the start of a shift you open the register and enter the cash float in the drawer. You sell all day. At closing you count the drawer, enter the totals, and close. The register report shows what should be there by payment method, so differences show up the same day, not at month end.
Before you start
- A register set up at your location (see the guide to adding locations and registers).
- Permission to open and close registers on your role.
- A fixed opening float your shop always uses, for example enough small notes for change on a busy Saturday.
- A quiet five minutes at close to count without serving.
Step by step: open the register
- Choose POS from the menu.
- If no register is open for you, the open register screen appears.
- Choose the location and register if asked.
- Count the cash in the drawer and enter it as the cash in hand.
- Choose Open register. The sales screen opens and you can start selling.
Count the float in front of the person handing over, if there is one.
During the shift
- Cash sales add to expected cash.
- Card and custom methods (such as gift cards or JazzCash) are totaled separately, so they never confuse your cash count.
- Cash refunds take away from expected cash.
- Expenses paid from the drawer, like a courier or tea, can be recorded so the drawer still balances.
Use Register details on the sales screen at any time to see running totals by payment method.
Step by step: close the register
- On the sales screen, choose Close register.
- The summary shows each payment method, sales, refunds and expected totals.
- Count the cash in the drawer. Enter the total cash.
- Enter the total card slips count and amount from your card terminal’s end-of-day report.
- Enter totals for any other methods you check, such as bank transfers.
- Add a closing note if anything is off, for example “Short by a small amount, change error at 4pm”.
- Choose Close register. Print the summary and keep it with the cash.
Run your card terminal’s own settlement or batch close as well. BoutiquePOS records card totals but does not settle with your processor.
How do I read the register report?
Go to Reports → Register report. Each row is one open-to-close shift, with the user, location, open and close times, and totals. Filter by user, location or date. Use it to:
- Spot repeated shortages for one person or shift.
- Match card totals to your processor’s statements.
- Check how busy each till was during a sale weekend.
Your sales, profit and stock reports draw on the same records. The how it works page shows how the daily routine fits together.
Common problems
“Register already open” when I start a shift
The last person did not close their shift. A manager should close it from the register report with an honest count, then you can open a new one.
Expected cash is far higher than the drawer
A card sale was recorded as cash. Find the sale under recent transactions, edit the payment method, and the expected cash will update.
I opened the register at the wrong location
Close it with the actual cash (likely the float), then open the correct one. Sales cannot be moved between registers once rung.
Staff cannot see Close register
Their role lacks the close register permission. Add it on the role (invite staff and set roles), or have a manager close.
